Fábio (Krayze) Januário

Four people dance under soft purple light on a dark stage. On the left, a person wears a white blouse and yellow skirt; in the center, a shirtless man with light-colored pants; and on the right, two men in light-colored pants, one wearing a white tank top and the other a red shirt with long braids, in dynamic poses.

“Musseque”, before being a piece for four dancers, is home, a meeting place, a way of being. ‘Musseque’ refers to the suburban neighborhoods of Luanda, Angola - areas mostly inhabited by the poorer population and where ‘Kuduro’ was born, a style of music and dance marginalized by many but loved by the people. It emerged as a way to claim space and freedom during the civil war that broke out in 1975.

Against the backdrop of war, the four performers on stage free themselves through rhythm, precision and resistance towards freedom. It is the continuation of what has been lived and felt, transforming past experiences that were never forgotten into a dance of the present. Speeches become a revolution and bodies become resistance. The hallucinating rhythm of movements displays the resilience of those who endure beyond war.

Fábio (Krayze) Januário was born in Luanda, Angola. He came to Portugal in 2002 where he began his dance career. In 2015 he completed his degree in Dance at Escola Superior de Dança (Lisbon). He developed his knowledge of urban dances in hip-hop, house, popping and locking, frequently giving Kuduro workshops and masterclasses in Portugal and abroad. He also teaches regularly at schools in the Lisbon area. As a dancer, he has worked at different festivals and with different artists. Fábio’s research is always in the area of Kuduro and for projects associated with other artists, from music videos to TV shows and galas. In 2023, he created his first play, Musseque, for an institutional theatre, Teatro do Bairro Alto in Lisbon.
