“Living Cultural Body” is not concerned with how culture is preserved, but rather how culture continues to generate itself. The voice is not accompaniment, but the origin of movement, guiding the body into a state of being. Through chant, rhythm, and breath, cultural memory is activated, tracing the lineage of the Paiwan people from the northern to the southern regions. Culture is not presented as display, but sustained through embodied action. As the singing reaches the south, bulabulay mun? (“How are you?”) emerges - a greeting that reaches across time, carrying memory and trauma while opening space for renewed connection.
Tjimur Dance Theatre is Taiwan's first professional dance company that focuses on the contemporary Paiwan people. Founded by artistic director Ljuzem MADILJIN in 2006 with Baru MADILJIN as the dance director and choreographer, the company is devoted to interpreting contemporary experiences through ancient ballads. Tjimur Dance Theatre integrates song with dance and uses song as a guide for dance moves to display the exceptional bodily expressions of Paiwan culture, exhibiting a unique style among the contemporary dance companies of Taiwan.
This guest performance is kindly supported by the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan and in cooperation with MARKK Museum Hamburg.
